Mr. Hawkins was born August 1, 1913, in Cheyenne, Oklahoma, to Nannie Rudella Cook Hawkins and Jack Milton Hawkins and passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2005, at Edmond Healthcare Center in Edmond, Oklahoma. He was a cowboy and grew up in the Kiowa County area and graduated from Consolidated 8 Schools in 1933. He and his wife farmed in the Durham and Strong City areas for awhile before moving to Higgins, Texas, where he “cowboyed” on the Tyson Ranch.
He and Boone Tyson were also in the horse business, raising and showing Appaloosas. In 1970, they showed the Reserve National Champion Stallion. He also “cowboyed” at the Smith Ranch near Higgins, Texas. He moved to Elmer in 1987 and worked with the Wayne Winsett cattle operation until his health declined. He enjoyed watching sports and was an avid roper. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
Survivors include his two sons, Jerry Hawkins and wife Glenda of Clarendon and Jack Hawkins of Edmond, Oklahoma; two sisters-in-law, Willie Wilks of Snyder, Oklahoma, and Olive Robinette of Santee, California; six grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
