Note: Basic training at Fort Bliss, Texas and then assigned to Fort Rucker where he qualified for flight training. He was sent to Vietnam as a helicopter maintenance specialist in 1967. After his first tour in Vietnam, Lt. Wilks entered flight school in Fort Walters, Texas, then was assigned to Fort Rucker for advanced training. At Fort Rucker, he received his wings and was appointed a warrant officer in June 1968. After an assignment in Fort Carson, he was sent to Vietnam for a second tour as a helicopter pilot. In Vietnam he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and other decorations. During his tour he was involved in three crashes. He returned to the states in January of this year [1970], and after a leave reported to Fort Rucker where he was assigned as an instructor-pilot. He was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant from chief warrant officer. …His other decorations included the Army Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star and Vietnam service medals.” |

Military funeral services were held from the Post Chapel at Fort Carson [August 31] with Capt. C.H. Cheyne, an Army chaplain and Rev. Graugerger officiating. Interment followed in the Memorial Gardens in Colorado Springs. This was a full military service. |
