Note: An Eagle Scout living in Cisco, he went to visit "Uncle" Emory Lusk and "Aunt" Viola "Ola" Newman Lusk on their farm in Cross Plains, Texas (not far from Eastland). While there, Gay Lee was either helping with the farming or taking the kids for a wagon ride with a team of horses. The horses bolted and he suffered a severe laceration of a leg with profuse bleeding. With his scout training he tried to stem the flow of blood, but apparently died as a result of the accident.
