Wrote to the Comptroller of Texas, 18 Mar 1925: "In regard to our pension of the old Confederate Soldier If I understand the Pension law I find that there is due me one quarter in nineteen 22 the State is due me one quarter this is mi forth trip to California. I am going back home in May if able to travel my old home at Miami Texas So if can send the amount I wod be $48.00 that wod pay mi far on the train So I hope to hear from you I want to live in Texas. I surved in the army I am 91 years old. Yours most truly A. K. WILKS¶ "Pleas exscuse mi bad hand righting I am So nurvise I can hardly rite at tal mi family most all live in Texas near Amberilo Texas Peas do what you can for me for I made a galint Soldier half died and all most Starved to death at times and faced the deadly Cannon and the many -- thousand muskets. I am the only one liveing of mi old company of 100 Soldiers. I want to live to be 100 years if the good Lord is willing¶ bi bi"¶ The Comptroller wrote to Mr. Wilks that he could not issue other warrants until his return to Texas and filing of affidavits. wrote letter to Mr. Auditor of Confederate Pension, Austin, TX, stating he came to California to visit his children, had been there about 8 months, and would return home by 25 of November asking that his pension be forwarded to Miami, TX, "I am 79 years old, I surved 4 years in the Southern army and made a true Soldier fighting for our Just Rites was wonded in the Battle of Vicksburg . . . have no income attal."
