Note	From THE TRI-CITY REPORTER, DYER, TN; DR.R L NEWMAN PRACTICED HERE FOR FORTY YEARS WIDELY KNOWN PHYSICIAN DIED SUDDENLY SUNDAY Dr R L Newm,an, a practicing physician in Dyer for 40 years, died suddenly Sunday afternoon, Aug. 4, 1946, at his home in the Newman Hotel here of a heart attack. He was 76. He had been in ill health for the past three years and had suffered several attacks prior to the one that claimed his life, but his sudden attack was a shock to his family and friends. He was apparaently feeling well and in the best of spirits Sunday and was sitting in his room when stricken. Prominent in West Tennessee medical circles, he was widely known, and enjoyed a large practice. When his health first broke, he attempted to retire from his profession on the advice of his doctors, but due to the shortage of medical men and the great demand for their services, he carried on during the war years, doing all he could to help relieve the strain on his colleagues. Dr. Newman was born in Hardin County,TN Dec 11, 1869. He practiced medicine and operated a store at Morris Chapel, TN, before moving to Dyer 40 years ago. In 1897 he was narried to Miss Ida Lee Perkins, to which union two sons were born, one of whom, Dr. Manie P Newman, died in 1928, a few months following the death of Mrs. Newman. The other son, Robert L. Newman, Jr. Dyer attorney and business man, survives him. During his residence here, Dr. Newman, while devoting his entire time to his profession, was interested in farming and business activities. He was an extensive land owner and was for a time in the automobile business with the late L S Landrum as Landrum-Newman Auto Co. He operated the Newman Hotel here and served for a while on the town council. He was a member of the Dyer Church of Christ. Funeral Services were hgeld Mon. PM at 4 o'clock at the Dyer Methodist Church by Rev. Adrian Doran of Murray, KY. Burial at Oakwood Cem., JW Baird & Sons in charge. Besides his son, Dr. Newman leaves one brother, Mat Newman of Parsons, TN, and 2 sisters, Mrs. Minnie Everetts of Scott Hill, TN and Mrs.Mary Austin of Wilson, Okla.
