Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the M E Church for Dr. Manie P Newman, 27, the son of Dr. R L Newman of Dyer, who died in Boston, Mass. Thursday night June 14, following an illness of only six days. His father and brother, Robert Newman, were with him when death came.
The young doctor was serving as an intern at the Carney Hospital in Boston, where he had gone about a month ago to prepare for surgery. He was stricken Saturday and an examination by hospital surgeons revealed complications which were pronounced critical. A message received her Monday urged his father to come at once. His brother left immediately, and his father, having received another message Tuesday morning, left for Boston that afternoon.
Friends and relatives of Dr. Newman were shocked to hear of his critical condition. They were encouraged Wednesday by a report that he was much better, and when the news of his death came Friday morning, a feeling of sadness was cast over the entire community and expressions of sorrow and regret was evidenced on every hand of the passing of such a billiant young mane with so bright a future and a useful and succeful career.
The body was returned to Dyer Sunday morning. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church Monday by Rev Arch Houston, pastor of the Christian Church, Raymer, Tn.,assisted by Attorney General F C Sherrod of Humboldt and Hon. Louis E Elkins of Dyer. Burial followed in the Oakwood Cemetery. The funeral and burial was attended by one of the largest and most symathetic crowds ever attending a funeral in Dyer. Many prominet physicians thru this section attended the funeral and paid their respects to a deceased "brother" in their profession. He was buried with Masonic honors, having been a 32nd degree Mason of the Dyer Lodge. Many glowing tributes were paid to his splendid life and character.
Manie Perkins Newman , son of Dr. R L & Ida Perkins Newman, was born March 19, 1901. At the age of 8 years, he moved with his parents to Dyer, where his father, an influential citizen, has since been engaged in the practice of medicine. He was a graduate of Dyer schools. Possessing a bright mind, he was a leader in his classes and honors were bestowed upon him in his schoolwork. Following his graduation from Dyer High School, he entered Vanderbilt University, where he graduated from the academic school in 1923, with the A B Degree. He graduated from Medical School in 1927. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and had several honors conferred on him while in the University, being a member of the Owl and Commodore clubs, the University's nist civeted elective organizations.
