Note	Banner-Herald, Jun 3, 1928 - "Mrs Mattie E Wilkes died at a local hospital Saturday morning about three o'clock after a short illness. She was thirty-two years of age. She was born in Madison county but had resided in Atlanta during the past seven years. "Funeral services will be conducted from Gordon's Chapel, Madison county, Sunday morning at 11 o'clock with Rev Roy P Sampley in charge and interment will follow in Gordon's Chapel Cemetery. Bernstein Brothers funeral home in charge. "Pallbearers will be Edgar Dillard, George Barber, Hoyt Nelms, Corylis Epps, Lonnie Seagraves, Major Martin, John Barrett, and Lamar Barber. "Mrs Wilkes is survived by her husband, D H Wilkes; one son, Millard D Wilkes; mother, Mrs Osie Thornton, Madison county; one sister, Mrs J G Barnett, Madison county; three brothers, W M, J L, and H A Thornton. "Mrs Wilkes was a good Christian woman and leaves a large number of friends who will regret to learn of her passing."
