Note	Transcribed from old newspaper clipping from papers of Laura Ophelia Wilkes Hardy (no date) and transcribed by Laura Anne Harrison: "FUNERAL RITES HELD FOR MRS WILKS, JEFFERSON PIONEER "Funeral services for Mrs. L. J. Wilkes, 85, who died August 2 at her home in the Bethany Community, near Jefferson, Ga., were conducted at Bethany Methodist Church. "She is survived by three sons: H. C. Wilkes and J. E. Wilkes of Jefferson, and Roy Wilkes of Athens; three daughters: Mrs. M. W. Whitfield, Jefferson, Mrs. Laura Hardy of Virginia, and Mrs. John Wortham, Athens; seventeen grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. "Mrs. Wilkes, who was known in the community as "Aunt Sallie" was born Feb. 9, 1860, and lived in Bethany community since she was eighteen. She was a charter member of the Bethany Methodist Church, having joined there when the church was established in 1878. "Mrs. Wilkes, the widow of the late L. J. Wilkes, had attracted a large circle of friends by her gentle graciousness and willingness to help those in need, and to these many friends, her death is a great loss."
