Former Banker Dies After Long Illness
Memphian, 90 Once Headed Newbern Institution
"Quincy Shumate, former Newbern Tenn. banker, who celebrated his 90th birthday Tuesday died at Methodist Hospital at at 5:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon following an illness of six months. He lived at 1694 Forrest and had been in declining health several years.
"Mr Shumate, a native of Kentucky was president of a bank at Newbern for many years and was widely known in West Tennessee business and social circles prior to his retirement about 20 years ago. Before moving to Memphis in 1926, he was in the general mercantile business at Lewisburg, Tenn. for several years. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church.
"He leaves four daughters, Mrs. Selwyn Tucker of Memphis, Mrs. Charles B. Kingry and Mrs. Marthabelle Baum of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Frances MacPherson of Los Angeles; a granddaughter, Mrs. C. Lyle Durham of Ripley, Tenn.; two nieces, Miss Blythe Gentry of Memphis and Mrs. Frank Grisham of Newbern; two nephews, Joseph Gentry of Fort Stanton, N.M., and Collins Gentry of Seattle. He was the foster father of Mrs. James H. Moran of Dresden, Tenn. and Mrs. Temple Harris of Fort Worth, Texas.
"Services conducted by the Rev. Robert H. McCaslin will be held at National Funeral Home at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
"Pallbearers will be Blythe Gentry, Frank Grisham, Jack Chism, Lester Fisher, Lyle Durham and C.H. Moran.
