"Mary Niles Medley was the daughter of Hugh Davidson and Susan Howard McLean. She married John Bell Medley on July 22, 1865 at Evening Shade, Arkansas. Together they had 8 children: William A.,Rufus E., Mattie C., Sophia E., Hubert F., Julia J., Malcolm "Mack" E., and Pearl A.
"Her granddaughter, Julia Houston-Simpson said that she loved to tell stories to the children in the family and talked often of her childhood in Tennessee and of her own family history. Julia had a letter which "Mamie" (as she was affectionately called) wrote in the back of a covered wagon to one of her sisters on returning to Tennessee shortly after the Civil War. In the letter she tells of how heart broken "Pappa" was to see the damage done by the war.
