Address: 14th Virginia Infantry Regiment, Company B Citation details: Pages 175, 176 Note: served CSA in 14th VA Infantry, wounded and captured in Pickett's charge.¶ Callohill Menis Newman was born July 10, 1830, in Bedford County near present day Huddleston. His Great-Grandfather, John Conrad Newman, was a veteran of the American Revolution, who had immigrated from Germany to Bedford County by way of York Town, PA and Strasburg, VA He had married a Swiss immigrant, Anna Brobeck, daughter of Adam and Elizabeth. The two raised eleven children.¶ Callohill married his second cousin, 16 year old Julia Ann Wilkes, Dec 10, 1849. Julia was the Granddaughter of Samuel Wilkes (also a veteran of the American Revolution) and Elizabeth Newman the eldest daughter of John Conrad Newman.¶ When Virginia withdrew from the Union in April 1861, Callohill left Bedford County with the first infantry volunteers and walked to James City, Virginia. In May of 1863 he went AWOL, probably to help his family plant crops. On June 29th he rejoined his unit on the way to Gettysburg, PA. He was somewhat retracing the path his ancestors had taken in the 1760’s and 1770’s from Pennsylvania to the Valley of Virginia and then Bedford County.¶ He was with Company B, 14th Virginia Regiment of Gen. Longstreet’s Corps, Gen. Armistead’s division, which fought under Gen. Pickett at Gettysburg. The battle took place July 1st to 3rd and records show that Callohill was wounded and captured from the battlefield July 3rd and sent to Fort Delaware and then later transferred to the Yankee prison at Point Lookout, Md. He died there 13 months later on Aug 22, 1864, of chronic diarrhea and is buried in a mass grave on the site of the present day Point Lookout Historical Park. His possessions were returned to his wife by the Union.¶ His 6th child, Will Henry Newman, was born Feb 20, 1864, nine months after Callohill went AWOL. He never saw his last son. Julia gave Will Henry his father’s Civil War Saddle. This saddle was placed in the museum at Point Lookout, Md along with a brief history of Callohill by his Great-granddaughter.¶ Submitted by Billie Newman Carwile, Great-granddaughter, 1520 Rivermont Ave, Lynchburg, VA 24503 |
