Military

"captured on Nov 10, 1862 in Jefferson City, MO and imprisoned at the Gratiot Military Prison in St Louis, MO. He had smallpox on Jan 29, 1863 while in the military prison. ¶ Jesse is shown in the listing of general orders issued by the United States Army, Department of the Missouri, general orders # 143 date Dec 1, 1863, St. Louis, MO."

Note

Perkin's Battalion Missouri Infantry CSA

Recruited by a Capt. Caleb Perkins. It was composed primarily of men recruited North of the Missouri river. It started off being a Cavalry unit. Around Sept. 1864 it managed to cross the Missouri river and head South. Perkins' Battalion was assigned to Col. Chas. H. Tyler's brigade of Mo. recruits. Lt. Col. Caleb Perkins was 1st Commander and later commanded by Lt. Col. Quinton Peacher. It accompanied Gen. Sterling Price on his 1864 Missouri raid. In Dec. 1864 the unit was dismounted and used as infantry. In April 1865 it was assigned to Mitchell's Infantry brigade, Parson's Division.

Perkins' battalion was paroled June 7th at Alexandria, LA. No muster rolls are known to exist. The only roster available is that compiled from POW records.

Note

According to Ronald Kanatzar their children were: Mary Eva, Hattie Olive, Son, Anna, Henry and Jesse Foster. Jessie's obit state, "To this union were born six children four of whom survive, viz: Mrs. C. E. Note

"Mr. Kanatzar was a soldier in the Lost Cause, having enlisted when a boy. His experiences in the army and afterward in the military prison where the Confederate soldiers were imprisoned in St Louis, were many and varied. He being the youngest of the company, was a general favorite and on one occasion when he refused positively to give any information as to the leaders in an attempt to escape, he was applauded by the Federal soldiers and the officer was forced to acknowledge that the boy was nobler in refusing than he had been in demanding the information."

Note

"Funeral services were conducted Monday at Unity Church, two miles from Benton City, by Rev. McLaughlin, of Illinois, after which the remains were brought to Centralia and interred beside his wife."
