Note	"John R. Smith, as a young married man, had a meat market in Johnson City, Texas, and also worked on several ranches near Johnson City, Texas. The family moved to Luling, Texas, where John went into partnership with a Mr. Weston in a meat market. Later, he sold his partnership to Mr. Weston and moved his family to a farm near Leesville, Gonzales County. They had their cotton ginned at Wrightsboro and then taken to Cuero or Gonzales, whichever was the better market. At these places farm products were sold and family supplies were purchased. In the fall of 1898, the Smith family moved to Austin where they remained a year. Then in 1899, the family moved to Marble Falls to be near Tennessee's brothers and their families. John contracted to load out sandstone rock onto railroad cars. John Smith then opened the first cedar yard in Marble Falls for B. Badger and Sons where he worked for a number of years."
