Citation details: page 178 and 179 Note: from Leonard Newman, "ADAM NEWMAN. 'Adam, where art thou?' Many years ago, after 1825, there came to the Tennessee River Valley four Newman brothers, Garrett, the oldest, then Adam, Shelby and Henry Jr. Their father and mother, Henry and Molly Arthur Newman remained in Grayson and Bedford County, Virginia. Garrett and Adam Newman settled in Decatur and Perry Cos., TN, records dated 1832. Shelby Newman records show (1837 Alcorn County, Mississippi census – [5 in household]) . . .¶ "The Garrett Newman records show to be complete including Newman families living today around Sardis, Tennessee where the Newman Cemetery is located.¶ "Adam and Alisa Rebecca Newman began their family in Decatur County, Tennessee where William Newman was born February 17, 1833 (Newman family records). The Adam Newman family moved to Alcorn County and Adam and William are recorded in the 1850 census.¶ "William Newman married Phoebe Jane Reynolds and bought a farm in Old Farmington. William was in the 6th Mississippi Cavalry, Moreland's Regiment and was detailed to build wagons for the Confederacy on his farm until the general surrender (family records). My grandfather was born James Nelson Newman, July 24, 1867, Corinth, Mississippi. My great-grandfather, William Newman, continued to farm until 1870, then they moved to Texas. The Newman families have always been in Alcorn County both living here and visiting.¶ "My father, Leonard Hayes Newman Sr., born July 19,1918. I, Leonard Hayes Newman Jr. was born August 29, 1942. Leonard Sr. always told me that he was kin to "Adam." I thought it to be a family joke. But I found myself in 1998 "Looking for Adam" in Corinth, MS. Interesting bits of history: James Nelson Newman built a strong business in Dallas, Texas, an antique picture of the J. N. Newman store was featured in the TV series 'Dallas.' " |
