Immigration
before 1834 (aged 39 years)
Note: followed the migration of Conrad’s and Nimrod’s family members from Virginia to Tennessee. Newman brothers and cousins proceeded across the state to Perry County and other locations, some staying and others moving west. Henry Jr. found his way to Hardin County in western Tennessee along with Garrett Newman, a brother. Henry Jr. lived there many years and was in the 1870 census at the reported age of 78, born in Virginia, with second wife Rebecca and four children. He died before 1880. Garrett got a land grant in Henderson County, Tennessee, was there in 1840 census, across the line in Hardin County 1850, and died at the age of 64 in 1860, leaving his wife and a large family. His name derived from the son Conrad and Anna names Gerhardt which quickly became Americanized to Garrett, and thus a significant clue linking these families in faraway Tennessee.

Text:

It is an old cemetery and one of the largest in Henderson County. The cemetery is well maintained. Like many area cemeteries which have been in continuous use since before the Civil War, fieldstone have all been removed and the oldest part of the cemetery near the crest of the rise in the center is being reused. The markers from the 1960s through 1990s are surrounded by markers from the 1830s through 1860s. The total number of people buried here without markers cannot be estimated but must number over 100.

Note: Garrett Newman circa 1792 - Oct. 1859 has a replacement stone according to David Donahue, the creator of Sardis Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee, file.
