Obituary: MORTUARY (from the Brownwood Bulletin June 25, 1924) ~ "JOHN W. NICHOLSON, SR. After an illness of about three months John W. Nicholson, Sr. died at 3:10 o'clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. P. Holcomb, 1908 Brownwood. All the children were to be held at that home this afternoon at 5:00 o'clock by Rev. W. R. Hornburg, with interment in Greenleaf cemetery.¶ Surviving him are his wife and the following children: John W. Nicholson, Brownwood; O. H. Nicholson, Houston; Andrew Nicholson, Waco; Mrs. J. P. Holcomb, Mrs. Frank Griffin and Mrs. Archie Sneed, all of Brownwood. All the children were here when death came, as was a sister Mrs. T. R. Smith of Austin. A brother W. H. Nicholson of San Antonio was unable to come.¶ Mr. Nicholson was a native of Texas and had never been outside the state although for many years his labors were along the borders on Red River in the north and the Rio Grande in southwest. He was born at Texarkana October 29, 1846 and his early life was spent in the saddle on the cattle range. He was married to Miss Ella Lackey in Blanco County about forty-four years ago. About forty years ago he was converted and joined the Baptist Church and at the time of death was member of the Coggin Avenue Baptist congregation. All his life he labored hard and faithfully was a good husband and father for his family, kindly neighbor and a splendid citizen who gave himself in unselfish service; and although he stored up little of this world's goods he leaves to his family a rich heritage of good deeds, and his passing is mourned by many friends who had loved him and respected him during his long and useful life." |
