According to Doris Ross Johnson, the family genealogist, he did not have middle name of Hampton, as previously thought but has not given her reason for stating this. Samuel's daughter Laura named a son Samuel Hampton McBryde. |
Note
|
"[Bessire.ftw] Buried in the Old Collins, Nueces County, Texas Cemetery, he and wife buried in unmarked graves. Samuel Young, the last of Dr. Henry Young's children and the only one born in Texas, was just four years old when orphaned and lived with his siblings until he was grown. His whereabouts at the time of the 1860 census are not known, but by 1870 Samuel and his wife were back in Hill County with an infant, Joseph Young. After the census they moved to Walnut Springs, Bosque County, where a child James E. was born. In 1875 Samuel Young was listed next to Wesley Young in Erath County taxlists, with 160 acres; and in 1876-77 was listed as S. Young. Probably one or two children were born in Erath County, Texas. Next Samuel and Jenatta went west to Eastland County, where at least two more children were born, the second on January 24, 1880. By the time of the 1880 census they lived in the next westward county, Callahan, its set is Abilene, without baby Joseph. The family went to South Texas, arriving at Collins, Nueces County, (near present-day Alice, Texas), where between the summer of 1880 another daughter was born in Collins, Nueces County, Texas. There in 1882, Samuel Hampton Young died within months after the baby was born. He was 38 years old and reportedly died of pneumonia. He left a young expectant widow with six children to support. This she endeavored to do, while waiting for relatives to come and take them back to Central Texas, by cooking for the railroad crews, but she miscarried with twin girls and died soon afterwards in October 1882. Someone came to the house and found the young children alone with their dead mother. The older children and neighbors thought some of their family would come to get them, but Hill and Bosque Counties and the Grace and Young families were far away. Time passed and no one ever came, a bitter memory the orphan children carried with them. No formal guardianship records have been found. The children were ta ken in by various neighbors but ended up with the Henry Staples and Willial Staples families, a father and son, near Lagarto, Live Oak County, Texas. Another family took Laura Belle, the daughter born in 1880, but apparently she was not treated well, for a kindly priest, Father Bard, who visited removed her from the family and placed here with the William Staples family. He checked on her from time to time, and she was fond of him, in time coverting to Roman Catholicism. Only Nina, Otho, and Laura Belle grew up to marry and have children. Nina Young kept seven month old baby Alice, the sister born in 1882, with her until she married.<p" Citation details: “Pedigree Resource File” database. Submitter: rrcbessire2769055. |
