Note
"Ordered that the Overseers of the Poor bind Archibald Wilks to Anderson Melton," Book 9, June 1789. Archibald's mother is assumed to be Sarah Wilkes and his father deceased, since Anna and Jessee Wilkes were bound to Joseph Rhodes and Archelaus Wilkes was bound to Anderson Melton in Order Book 9, page 282, December 1790; and again in Order Book 10, page 347, December 22, 1794, Archelaus "son of Sarah Wilkes" was bound again to Anderson Melton; while Peyton Wilkes son of Sarah, bound to Stephen Martin in Order Book 11, page 240, January 22, 1798, was apparently the youngest child. Peyton Wilks in Order Book 15, page 180, January Court 1810 was bounded "to George Walker according to law." Citation details: pagee 265 |
Note
"Archibald Wilkes (b 1782 Montgomery Co VA) was the son of (Henry?)Wilkes and Sarah (Burchum?), born in the present Grayson Co or Wythe Co. He was a carpenter. His father died when he was very young, and in 1789 at the age of 7 he was bound out to Anderson Melton of Bedford Co VA. In1808 he sold land in Bedford Co VA, and in 1817 the Bedford court noted that he had “moved to the next county”. In 1840 he lived in the southern district of Bedford Co VA, had no slaves. In 1860 Archibald was 78 years old, living with his wife Lucy, daughter Lucy, and his son William's family at Gills Creek in Franklin Co VA."
