Lampasas Downtown Historic District

Section 8 Page 40 Lampasas, Lampasas County, Texas

The Northington Building, 420 South Live Oak Street, is a two story commercial block at the southwest corner of the courthouse square. Alex J. Northington bought this lot in 1869 and erected this building in 1870. The outside loadbearing wall are made of squared-off [hewn] limestone. That was quarried about four miles north of Lampasas on property belonging to A.P. Anderson. The building has limestone lintels, sills, and a simple carved limestone cornice. The rafters are un-hewn cedar logs, probably of local origin. This building escaped a devastating fire in 1884 which destroyed most of the west side of the square. ¶ About 1917, the lower part of the front and part of the south side of the building were removed, leaving a column at the southeast corner of the building to support the second floor. These walls were removed to convert the first floor into a service station and tire repair shop. In June 1917, the Lampasas Tire Hospital opened for business offering tire repair and gasoline. In 1922, EDMUND C. PERRY bought the business and changed the name to the Lampasas Service Station. In 1937, a fire broke out in the Lampasas Tire Store in the back of the building. The fire was discovered in time and the building suffered a small amount of damage.
